The Sandbox NEXT Invites Players to Early Battle Royale Playtest on Mobile

The team behind The Sandbox is preparing to test a new direction for its ecosystem. Titled The Sandbox NEXT, the upcoming experience shifts focus toward fast-paced, session-based gameplay, with a fully mobile third-person battle royale shooter built using Unreal Engine.

The Sandbox Next playtest coming to mobile

An exclusive playtest is scheduled to run from March 26 through April 9, offering early access to what appears to be a battle royale-style experience set within the project’s voxel-driven universe.

A Mobile-First Pivot

Unlike previous iterations associated with The Sandbox’s PC-centric creator ecosystem, NEXT is designed from the ground up for iOS and Android devices. The move reflects a broader industry trend toward mobile-native multiplayer titles, particularly in regions where smartphone gaming dominates.

The playtest will feature two dynamic maps, with sessions focused on quick matchmaking and competitive encounters. Players can expect to jump into matches, face off against others, and explore rotating environments throughout the testing window.

Registration for the playtest is open from March 18 to March 25, with access limited to selected participants. Anyone can register for a chance to participate here: sandbox.game/next/en/

Incentivized Testing Through Web3 Rewards

As with much of The Sandbox’s broader strategy, blockchain-based rewards are integrated into the playtest structure. Participants will be able to complete up to four daily quests across separate days, each tied to in-game performance.

Rewards include:

  • One Quest NFT per completed daily objective (up to four total)
  • A final “Grand Prize” avatar unlocked by collecting all four NFTs

These NFTs will be distributed via players’ Sandbox accounts, with the final avatar claimable roughly one week after the playtest concludes. The avatar—described as a themed “Duck” character—will be usable across the wider Sandbox ecosystem.

Competitive Referral Layer

In addition to gameplay rewards, the playtest introduces a referral system designed to drive onboarding. Players who share referral codes can climb a leaderboard based on successful registrations. The top 10 referrers will split a pool of 10,000 $SAND, the platform’s native token.

Early Signals of a Gameplay Evolution

While The Sandbox has historically emphasized user-generated content and virtual land ownership, NEXT suggests a parallel push into more traditional multiplayer gaming formats. The addition of a battle royale structure—combined with Unreal Engine’s capabilities—signals an attempt to compete more directly with mainstream mobile shooters while retaining Web3-native incentives.
