Cambria is an experimental massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for PC centered on high-risk adventuring, competitive territorial activity, and a player-driven medieval-fantasy economy. The narrative unfolds as migrants, mercenaries, and tradespeople flee the troubled Crownlands and enter New Cambria through the Realm Gates. Drawing inspiration from earlier sandbox titles such as Runescape and Ultima Online, it integrates skilling, player-versus-player combat, player-versus-environment encounters, trading, exploration, and political dynamics within a hazardous frontier setting. Gameplay revolves around managing risk, pursuing resources of limited supply, and navigating expeditions that can shift rapidly between opportunity and peril. Additionally, Cambria integrates blockchain technology (Ethereum/Ronin) to record and secure ownership of various game-related digital assets such as NFTs (e.g. companions, skins, land) and cryptocurrency (e.g. $ETH/$RON).
Game Features
- Two Distinct Modes: The game comprises a competitive Duel Arena focused on structured one-on-one contests and related minigames, and a large-scale Gold Rush mode emphasizing open-world exploration, resource extraction, monster hunting, and player conflict beyond the Capital City’s safe zones.
- Risk-Centric Exploration: The Gold Rush environment incorporates constant decision-making around expedition length and survival. Venturing further from safety increases potential rewards while exposing participants to escalating dangers and the possibility of losing accumulated gains.
- Stress System: A core mechanic that limits prolonged activity in higher-tier regions by applying accumulating negative effects tied to exploration, combat, and resource gathering. Rising stress levels enforce trade-offs between extending a run for greater returns and retreating before conditions become untenable.
- Multi-Type Combat Framework: Combat is organized around Melee, Ranged, and Magic, each supported by varied weapons and armor sets. Encounters involve selecting appropriate equipment for the environment, opponents, and desired tactical approach.
- Special Attacks: Weapons may grant forceful abilities that offer temporary advantages—such as heightened accuracy, increased damage, or mobility effects like dashing through targets. These actions provide situational leverage beyond standard attacks.
- Diverse Damage Types: Encounters incorporate several damage categories—Crush, Slash, Pierce, Poison, Bleed, and Burn—each associated with distinctive mechanical effects, including armor penetration, stacking accuracy, damage-over-time states, or temporary reductions to healing and attack speed.
- Equipment Durability and Maintenance: Weapons, armor, and tools degrade through use and must be repaired when worn down. Repair functions are available at Scrapping Tables in exchange for in-game currency and create ongoing logistical considerations during extended play.
- Resource Transport via Wagons: Constructible wagons allow players to move heavy materials across long distances. Building one requires specific materials and interaction with an NPC craftsman in the Capital City.
- Prayer Skill System: Progression in Prayer grants access to toggleable status effects, including defensive “Protection Prayers” that reduce incoming damage from particular combat styles. Advancement is achieved by collecting and burying bones from defeated NPCs.
Blockchain Integration
Cambria features some form player-owned economy where players can effectively own and trade several game-related digital assets (e.g. companions, land, factories, skins, cryptocurrencies) outside of the game, using smart contracts built on the Ethereum and Ronin blockchains to record and secure transactions thereof. The game operates directly or indirectly using at least two cryptocurrencies: $RON and $ETH, which serve as mediums of exchange for NFTs , and as wager currencies on 1v1 matches.
Cambria is not open source. While ownership of digital assets is decentralized and secured on the blockchain, users may not be able to run the game in the event that its online service is prematurely shut down.
